"The Big Thunder" JIM GUNDERSON (on keyboards and bass) and "'TENDER" TIM SHEA (on guitar and saxophone). Founded in 2008 in San Franciso, California, the band's early configurations featured Jan VanBuyton then Marty Brewer then Myron Cohen on drums. The band is now auditioning new drummers each week. Organsm is a new type of jazz band but drawing on the great tradition of Jimmy Smith, Brother Jack McDuff and Medeski, Martin and Wood. Organsm plays bossa nova, world, swing, samba, Afro-Cuban, Boogaloo funk and rock.
Organsm is available for club dates, weddings and other events.
Organsm (also known as The Organsm Trio) are a jazz band formed in San Francisco, California in 2008. The organ trio plays jazz standards, bossa novas, originals, sambas, blues, rock, RnB, and latin as well as educates the audience about the history of jazz. The founding members are Jim "The Big Thunder" Gunderson on keyboards and bass and "Tender" Tim Shea on guitar and saxophone. Marty Brewer was recently added to the lineup on drums.
Jim Gunderson, one of Organsm's founding members, is a significant contributer to the San Francisco and world jazz scene. Mr. Gunderson studied at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan before moving to the bay area. Mr. Gunderson has performed with a fantastic array of legendary jazz artists such as Gary Bartz, Larry Hancock, Vince Lateano, John Handy, T-Lowe and Ray Barretto.
"Tender" Tim Shea is a songwriter and music educator who has influenced many young musicians through his classes on songwriting, music production and music history (in California public schools and the famously progressive School One in Providence, Rhode Island). He is the founder of the "Make Your Own Kind of Music" music education program. He has also performed or studied with such musical icons as Donald "Duck" Bailey, (David) TRONZO, Vince Lateano, Mark French, Don Alberts, Brian Patneaude, Adrian Cohen, Al Coster, Lauren Passarelli, Roomful of Blues, Pat Pattison, Chase Pierson and Mechanical Bull. Tim Shea was also the bartender, host and frequent performer at the legendary jam sessions at Savanna Jazz club in San Francisco for years. There Tim learned from and played with Danya Stevens, Jazz Sawyer, Matt Clarke, Smith Dobson and Eugene Warren among many others. For a period the jam sessions were co-led by "The King of the Organ Trio Drummers", Donald "Duck" Bailey (along with composer and pianist Don Alberts [Chet Baker, Leroy Vinnegar, Shorty Rogers, Bud Shank, David Friesen] and bassist Michael Jones [Pharoah Sanders, Carmen McCrae, Dianne Reeves]). Both Tim and Jim learned at these jam sessions directly from Jimmy Smith's drummer, Donald "Duck" Bailey, and are now continuing that tradition by teaching the history of the organ trio at their shows.

In a rare west coast appearance, alto sax legend Gary Bartz brings a great quartet to The Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society in Half Moon Bay, California Sunday April 16th at 4:30 p.m.
Gary started his career with Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln. He later became one of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers before being recruited by Miles Davis. He was with Miles for seven years; the only saxophonist that was with Miles longer than him was John Coltrane. Gary has become a staple at jazz festivals the world over and is currently recording his new CD, "The Feminine Side" in New York.
Gary brings with him the great drummer, Greg Bandy. Greg was a Charles Mingus discovery at age twenty. He went on to play with Betty Carter, Yusef Latif, Pharoah Sanders, Freddie Hubbard and many, many others. After 27 years in the business he produced his debut CD in 1997 which garnered two Grammy nominations.
Bassist David Certain has played with Jimmy Scott, Jimmy McGriff, Vincent Herring and many others. Greg Bandy and David have been together for several years having backed up a plethora of prominant performers. David has completed his all-original CD entitled "Compositions" featuring New York and San Francisco musicians.
Completing the quartet is pianist Jim Gunderson known for his work with legendary drummer Larry Hancock.
